The September Issue

Today in our class we watched a film called the September issue, based around the Editor of American Vogue magazine (Anna Wintour). I enjoyed this film, I thought it was very useful for the new brief we have just been given within our class (Styling and stories through visual imagery). I learnt that Vogue was the first magazine to feature celebrities in it, and after this other magazines caught on the trend and that is why celebrities became such an important part of the illustrations in the magazine. I realised how much work is involved when working as part of amagazine and it helped me realise that it isn't always easy. It's a lot of work within the fashion industry and I feel that you have to have tough skin when working in the publishing of the magazine. I think that working for Vogue could be really stressful, its an extremely successful magazine due to the amount of work that goes into it behind the scenes. I learnt that even if you create work that you feel is good it might not always be what the magazine is looking for, therefore you have to be able to take criticism and continue progressing in your work. I particularly liked the scene where Grace Coddington (stylist) was putting together all of her collections and being able to see what she created and the amount of work she does to make the magazine work. Although not all of her pieces that she put together were shot in the magazine she was still determined to succeed untill the magazine was exactly how they wanted it.
I think that Anna Wintour (Editor of Vogue) was tough but fair and it helped me to understand how busy her lifestyle was and how much passion she had to create something amazing.
I think that by watching this film it has helped me to realise all of the work and the amount of hours that go into the magazine behind the scenes, It helped me to understand the magazine and job roles a lot more and I think that after watching this film it will help me to appreciate the magazine a lot more. I think that the amount of work that they put into the magazine shows when it is finally complete, and I think that to work in an industry so big and being able to see a finished piece would be extremely rewarding.
