Today in class we watched the film Le ballon rouge. This was only a short film only lasting for a duration of thirty four minutes, it was created in 1956 by french filmmaker Albert Lamorisse. The little boy that starred in the film was Alberts own son.
Even though it's not usually a film that I would chose to watch, I did actually find it quite interesting how one film could have so many meanings. I thought that the contrast of the bright red balloon was very effective with the dullness of the back drop and the people. I thought that the balloon was conveyed as being the little boy's best friend and I think that this was made very obvious throughout the film. It made me feel like the balloon was the little boy's only friend and that he was very dependant on having the balloon close to him.
It was almost like the balloon was alive, as it moves around following the little boy. The balloon also looks asif it's looking at itself in the mirror almost trying to discover itself for what it is, similar to the little boy.
Many other people have been inspired from this film over the years, Mark Ronsons 'The bike song' was inspired by this film. He uses the same sort of idea, however the bright red bike comes to life and then he kind of replicates the end part of the film with all the balloons, by making it look like all of the bikes come to life so save the bike that was stolen.
Another person that was inspired by the film was the creators of the Dior advert. They too use a similar sort of style by using a red balloon also, then in a way this is a video too that replicates the end by the Dior model floating off at the end by the balloons carrying her away.
Banksy was an artist that used the film as an inspiration to one of his paintings 'Red balloon girl'. He created this piece of art using graffiti, he changed it slightly as he used a little girl and changed the shape of the balloon however it does relate back to the film. He used dull dark colours to create the girl and then used only the slight bit of colour on the balloon.
